Summary
Just outside the medieval city of San Gimignano perched on a
ridge sits the delightful 19th Century Italian Renaissance Villa of Santa
Maria. Centrally located in between Siena and Florence, guests of Santa Maria
are in a good position for touring while enjoying the privacy of this large
private estate.
Fine Points
Exterior
The grey stucco villa is approached by a gravel drive that winds
through an English park up to a small Italian garden that is enclosed by a low
box hedge, gravel paths and a rose garden on each side. Mediterranean shrubs,
and tall Cypresses frame the house and the wonderful view of the towers of San
Gimignano. Surrounding the house is a lovely shaded park to explore with
secluded walks and hidden niches, perfect for reflection, painting or reading.
Nestled below is a large, private pool.
Interior
The front door opens into the reception hall decorated with
antique furniture and fine oriental ceramics. The house has original Venetian
marble tiled floors, each room with it’s own design. Rooms are finely
proportioned and many furnished with period pieces and family heirlooms.
On the ground floor to the left of the reception hall is the
studio and television room.
Comfortable seating for viewing the large flat screen television
with DVD player and sky satellite that has sports, English language film,
current events and news channels. Off to the right is the lounge and dining
room adorned with a lovely frescoed ceiling.
To the rear is a fully equipped kitchen. Leading from the
kitchen to the left is a small corridor with a guests’ bathroom and the utility
rooms. It has a washing (far left) and dryer to the right. The back door opens
onto a small paved terrace, perfect for breakfast and lunch. A short flight of
steps and path lead down to the lower terrace and gardens furnished for eating
al fresco.
Bedrooms
From the entrance hall there is a sweeping staircase with wrought
iron banisters and beautiful lead paned stained glass window (please do NOT
open). It leads to the second floor where there are four bedrooms and three
bathrooms.
A double room with heavy carved relief work has a queen size
bed.
To the left of the corridor is a King/two twin bedroom with fine
carved headboard and furniture.
Opposite the bedrooms are two bathrooms adorned in ceramic tile.
One of the bathrooms has a shower, and the other has both a tub with shower.
The master bedroom has impressive 19th century heavily
carved ebonised furniture and a double bed, which can be two twins (king
together).
Opposite to the right is double room with en suite bathroom with
tub.
A further flight of stairs leads to the music room- a wonderful
open space to read, relax or play games, for the musical folks there is a
beautiful grand piano, as well as an additional full bathroom.
