Summary
Villa Carmignano was once a convent, dating back to the 13th
Century. It was recently and beautifully restored with careful attention to
detail, retaining the original architectural integrity. The owners have worked
to integrate modern amenities, while retaining an old world charm.
The villa is located on the top of the hills near Prato, close to
the villages of Carmignano and Poggio a Caiano, famous for two Medici villas-now
national monuments, and only10 km from Vinci. The beautiful panorama surrounding
the villa is that depicted in Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous paintings.
The hills surrounding the villa are shades of deep green, covered
by vineyards and olive groves. The villa produces a high quality extra virgin
olive oil and two different kinds of wine: a Sangiovese and a Carmignano D.O.C.G.
Guests are invited to sample these products along with marmalades from the
estate’s fruit trees-a taste of the region’s agricultural bounty.
Each one of the villa’s seven bedrooms provides every kind of
comfort: TV LCD, A/C, safe, mini-bar, spacious closet, well-equipped bathrooms
with hairdryers, welcome soaps/shampoos, etc.
Every room has its own bathroom with shower, except one, that
also has a bathtub.
The villa also offers the perfect chance to visit some of the
beautiful surrounding locales: Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Pistoia, Siena and the
chic beach resort of Forte dei Marmi. An 18-hole golf course is just a
five-minute drive, tennis courts are also close, and, within walking distance,
there is a charming restaurant that was historically Leonardo da Vinci
grandmother’s house.
Fine Points:
Exterior
Outside the villas entrance, guests are welcomed by a
well-manicured garden with various flowering plants. There is an expansive
loggia with a long wood table for dining al fresco, a large pool, and a gazebo
that has views of the surrounding hills. The pool (6x12 meters) has numerous
chaise lounges, and huge umbrellas, that allow guests to enjoy the views in the
sun, shade and the fresh air.
After climbing stone stairs to an elevated terrace, one arrives
at a large gazebo. There is a large marble table with comfortable chairs- a
perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine while overlooking the wonderful view of
the valley of Prato, Pistoia, Poggio a Caiano, and the surroundings.
Interior
The entrance hall introduces the guests to the villa’s
atmosphere-warm, elegant, yet with a rustic appeal. The ground floor is made up
of three living spaces. The largest room offers three soft sofas and a big
fireplace.
There is a music room with a piano, a fireplace and four
rectangular game tables.
There is also a media room. It has been organized as a movie
theater, with twelve armchairs and a 42” LCD TV.
The kitchen is on the same floor and it has much of the original
charm but with modern amenities. It has two large refrigerators, microwave oven,
convection oven, dish washing machines, coffee machine, toaster, lemon and
orange squeezer etc.
At the ground floor there is also an elegant bar, with
comfortable velvet armchairs, the managers office-closed off from the house for
privacy, and the billiard room, with a large 17th century billiard
table.
First Floor
Bedrooms
There are a total of seven bedrooms: four kings and three
bedrooms with twins that can be combined. Each of the first floor bedrooms has
Carrara marble bathrooms and is characterized by the color of the fruit it is
named after. Every room has been furnished with handcrafted Tuscan wood
furniture.
The Peach room
Three stairs bring the guest to this room’s elevated perch. It
has a soft orange hue, a king size bed with a window that faces the hills in the
distance. The bathroom in this suite is the only one with a bathtub.
The Apricot room
The warm yellow hue of this room is inviting. However, the
protagonist of this space is the fantastic 16th century Baldachin
wrought iron king size bed. The attached large bathroom has a big window
overlooking nearby hillsides.
The Plum room
The Plum room has two Baldachin single beds and it is very
spacious. The windows open directly on the garden and the pool. There is a
short aisle to reach the sun-filled bathroom with its large windows overlooking
the garden as well.
The Cherry room
This bedroom is considered the “kids room” It is smaller than
some of the other bedrooms. It offers two single beds and a view of the
garden. There is an adjoining bathroom.
The Strawberry room:
The Strawberry room offers a double bed and has a curious
architectural detail-the closet is a small room a little bit higher than the
bedroom itself-accessed by a couple of wood stairs. From the bedroom and
adjoining bathroom there are views of the estates olive groves, which are the
source of their proprietary olive oil.
The Library:
The elegant library has a big half moon window right in front the
entrance door, which provides views directly on the garden, pool and surrounding
hills. It is also open to the ground floor below, overlooking the stone details
of the original convent.
The Sage room & the Wheat bed rooms
These two rooms share a hallway that can be closed off by a
shared corridor, making it a potential independent suite.
The Sage room
The Sage room has two twin beds that can be combined. It is
spacious and bright as is the bathroom. The two windows open the view directly
on the garden outside with sun exposure almost all the day.
The Wheat room
The owners’ favorite suite, dubbed the “lovers or honeymoon
suite.” The bathroom is right in the entrance aisle and it has a high half moon
window that opens on the bedroom itself that is located below. There are
handcrafted wood stairs that lead down to the bedroom with a king size green
bed. In front of the beautiful bed there are two large windows, one on the
left side, and a third window to the right, making the room bright all day long.
This room offers the most beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.
